“Catharina Dhaen (°1992, Antwerpen) benadert schilderkunst op een hedendaagse, vernieuwende manier. Ze studeerde af aan het KASK in Gent en behoort tot een generatie kunstenaars die speelt met de grenzen tussen abstractie en figuratie. Haar werk, rijk aan kleur en textuur, weerspiegelt een speelse artistieke vrijheid en een sterke gevoeligheid. Door meerdere lagen aan te brengen en te overschilderen, laat Dhaen persoonlijke en autobiografische elementen verschijnen als motieven op het doek, waarbij ze elk schilderij benadert als een balans tussen het zichtbare en het verborgen. Ze heeft tentoongesteld in belangrijke instellingen zoals het M HKA en het Musée Marthe Donas, en wordt vertegenwoordigd door Gallery Sofie Van de Velde.
In haar tentoonstelling Metamorphosis nodigt Dhaen de kijker uit om de dynamiek tussen figuratie en abstractie te verkennen. De titel weerspiegelt de voortdurende evolutie en gelaagdheid die centraal staan in haar werk en praktijk. Ze werkt intuïtief, waarbij herkenbare beelden vervagen tot abstracte vormen, wat een spel creëert tussen herkenning en onbekendheid. Met thema’s zoals leven, dood, en wedergeboorte verkent ze emotionele en psychologische transformaties. In Metamorphosis brengt Dhaen ons in contact met de schoonheid en kracht van verandering en benadrukt ze de gelaagde relaties die onze perceptie van de wereld beïnvloeden.”
“Catharina Dhaen (b. 1992, Antwerp) approaches painting in a contemporary and innovative way. She graduated from KASK in Ghent and belongs to a generation of artists who play with the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. Her work, rich in color and texture, reflects a playful artistic freedom and a strong sensitivity. By applying multiple layers and painting over them, Dhaen allows personal and autobiographical elements to emerge as motifs on the canvas, approaching each painting as a balance between the visible and the hidden.
Her work, although seemingly joyful and colorful, evokes a sense of defiance, as if she does exactly what she wants. It is precisely this radical way of claiming her freedom that provides her a framework to create precisely what she desires. It is a freedom carefully crafted, and despite the playfulness on the surface, a lingering interplay of seduction and betrayal remains, prompting further contemplation.
Dhaen’s style is marked by a unique method of layering paint, constantly reworking and obscuring parts of her compositions to capture a sense of both freedom and restraint. Her works are layered and expressive works that explore the delicate balance between abstraction and figuration.”

“Catharina Dhaen vergelijkt schilderen met een schaakspel: in een vooraf onmogelijk vast te leggen aantal zetten worden grenzen, vormen, kleuren, lagen, perspectief gezocht en onderzocht, aangezet, afgetast en weer aangepast. In het uiteindelijke doek verdwijnt het zoeken nooit: Catharina’s werk is visueel sterk en voelbaar fragiel tegelijkertijd. Haar schilderijen lijken, wars van elke boodschap, enkel het schilderen zelf communiceren. Tegelijkertijd echter vatten ze het verlangen onze eigen, soms vluchtige, kleine, soms ontastbare percepties tastbaar te maken.”

‘There are many things at stake when I paint’ she says. ‘It’s never my intention to create a picture in the sense of portraying a specific subject. When I’m painting, I allow certain things to take shape. Sometimes, an image imposes itself. They are like characters coming on stage.’
‘My work may seem happy and colorful, it also invokes a sense of free- spiritedness, of doing whatever I like. But it’s exactly this radical way of claiming my freedom that provides me with a framework in which I can create exactly what I want. It’s a liberty I have created quite carefully. And despite the surface’s playfulness, there lingers this interplay of seducing and betrayal and any questions it might arise.’
‘You may not see it at first sight, but my work is always linked with my autobiographical story. Many motifs or shapes recur: they are elements from my life and they figure in my paintings. While I’m working, they come forward and I acknowledge them. Or at least recognize their place on my canvas. They come in various symbols that all have personal connotations. But my paintings are not reproductions of them, but rather interpretations.’
‘Writing poetry and literature has laid the foundation of my painting practice. I’m very much drawn towards so called ‘painters’ painters’, like Raoul De Keyser and Ilse D’Hollander, to name a few, who have really created a voice and a language in paint. Language as an image, basically. I have always loved painters whose works you can read like a poem. The question of whether something is abstract or figurative is irrelevant to me, a painting moves on a spectrum.’
‘My paintings are also biographical because I work quite intuitively. It’s a way to detangle the thoughts in my head. I paint out of necessity, but it’s not always satisfying. And that’s okay because I wouldn’t want my work to be pleasing. To me, painting is pure freedom.’
